Here’s How to Prevent It This Summer
Written by: Bren Parker
The hot temperatures of summer present health hazards to pets such as heatstroke. But did you know that they are susceptible to sunburn? Like us, dogs can get sunburned from overexposure to the sun’s rays and can result in a pretty painful situation. Fortunately, it’s as easy to prevent sunburn for dogs as it is for humans. Just a little common sense and sunscreen will keep your dog safe.
Tips For Preventing Sunburn:
- Use a sunscreen specifically formulated for dogs. Your vet should be able to recommend one. Just be mindful that human sunscreen often contains ingredients that are harmful to pets so stick to the veterinarian-approved products.
- Avoid the mid-day sun. Keep your dog inside during the hottest and sunniest part of the day. Plan walks and outdoor play for the early morning or evening.
- Watch out for dogs with light-colored hair, short hair, or light skin. While any dog can get sunburned, these guys are most at risk.
- When grooming your dog don’t cut the coat too short. That hair protects their skin from the sun.
- If you dog has thinning hair or a shaved patch from surgery, a light color t-shirt can protect his exposed skin when he is outside. Just watch out that it doesn’t make him too hot.
Keeping your dog safe from sunburn will insure that your buddy and you have a great time in the sunshine this season.
