As a pet parent it can be stressful seeing your pet age. Like with people, time takes its toll. But everyone’s hope is that their pet will have a long and healthy life and that they will be with us for as long as they possibly can. While we can’t control everything, the good news is there are ways we can give them the best chance at having a full lifespan. Here are some simple steps you can take to increase the likelihood of your dog or cat living a long and healthy life.
Keep your pet’s weight in check. Obesity increases a pet’s risk of several diseases and exacerbates the symptoms of others like heart disease and arthritis. It also has been shown to decrease their life expectancy by several years.
Some diseases are preventable. Eliminate the risks of certain diseases by keeping your pets current on their vaccinations, heartworm preventative, and flea prevention.
Keep your pet mobile. Arthritis and mobility issues set in as we age. The same goes for animals. Keep your dog fit with regular walks. Talk to your vet about what amount of exercise is appropriate as your dog ages. Cats, who have a greater tendency for lying around all day, can benefit from active play sessions.
Don’t skip taking them for checkups. For senior pets, an annual blood panel can signal health issues in the early stages. Proper treatment early on can increase your pet’s chances of a good prognosis.
Dental health can have an impact on overall health and the needs of each pet can vary widely. Some may have issues and need a dental cleaning every few years; others will go their entire life with no problems.
