Dog Safety Around the Water
Written By: Bren Parker
It’s the Dog Days of Summer and if you’re taking a plunge in the pool or cooling off at the lake, there’s a good chance your furry best friend is going to be right there with you. It’s a great way to share time with your pup but you’ll need to be mindful of your dog’s safety. Keep these tips in mind for an enjoyable and safe summer.
Make certain your dog can swim. Don’t just assume “ all dogs are natural swimmers.” Test him out first to see how he does.
Don’t force a dog in the water who doesn’t want to go. Some dogs love swimming while others won’t go anywhere near the water.
Monitor your dog’s activities. Swimming is exercise and some dogs know when they are tired. Other will go until they drop. It’s your job to decide when they’ve had enough.
Never leave a dog unsupervised in or near the water.
Have steps or a ramp for them to get out of the pool and teach them how to use them.
Use a properly fitted doggy life jacket particularly at the lake or when on a boat where you dog could suddenly jump into the water.
Do not let your dog drink the water. Pool water has chemicals and lake water has bacteria, pollutants, and who knows what else. Provide your dog with his own bowl of fresh water so he’s less likely to be thirsty for more.
If near a river or creek, check the current before letting your dog get in.
Don’t forget the doggie sunscreen if you’re spending all day at the pool or lake on a sunny day. Dogs can get burned on their nose and ears, and if their hair is too short, on the body as well.
